Dear ,

Welcome to the April 2025 Edition of the MPG Newsletter!

This month, we were pleased to announce the election of Thomas Huddleston as a new member of MPG’s Board of Directors. With a longstanding history at MPG and extensive expertise in migration research and policy, Thomas brings valuable insight and commitment to our mission.

April also brought renewed energy to MPG’s 30th anniversary celebrations, with reflections and initiatives that highlight how meaningful, lasting change is made possible through solidarity and collaboration. These contributions continue to reflect the values at the heart of our work: justice, inclusion, and dignity.

We spotlighted A Comparative Analysis of Non-Discrimination Law in Europe 2024, a new report from the European network of legal experts in gender equality and non-discrimination, revealing persistent gaps in enforcement, sanctions, and access to justice, 20 years after key EU anti-discrimination laws were adopted. It calls for attention to the gap between law and practice.

MPG also joined over 80 organisations in signing a joint letter coordinated by ECRE, urging institutional and private donors to respond to growing funding gaps that are placing asylum systems under serious strain.

On 8 April, we marked International Roma Day by sharing a policy brief outlining steps to combat racial profiling, improve access to justice, and strengthen equality data collection. In parallel, MPG engaged with students, partners, and policymakers across Europe through lectures, workshops, and visits focused on migration policy, border externalisation, and the drivers of mobility.

Looking ahead, we invite you to join us in Brussels on 27 May for the final MINTE conference on refugee integration and digital tools in exile.

Thank you to everyone who continues to collaborate with and support MPG. We look forward to building the next chapter together.

Warm regards,

Isabelle Chopin, Director of MPG

We are delighted to welcome Thomas Huddleston back to MPG as a new member of our Board of Directors. Thomas has been part of MPG’s journey for many years and continues to champion inclusive migration policies. We look forward to working together again as we strengthen our mission for justice and dignity.

April brings a fresh wave of perspectives to our 30th anniversary series – voices that embody the values of justice, inclusion, and dignity that have driven MPG’s mission since the beginning. From grassroots organising to academic research and philanthropic leadership, these contributors highlight the diverse ways change happens – and how collaboration remains key to progress. We are honoured to feature:

25 years after key EU anti-discrimination laws, enforcement remains uneven. A new analysis, prepared by Isabelle Chopin and Catharina Germaine (MPG) for the European network of legal experts in gender equality and non-discrimination, reveals legal gaps, weak sanctions, and limited access to justice. Formal equality exists, but real, lived equality is still missing.

On Tuesday, 27 May 2025, the final conference of the MINTE project will present key findings on the integration of refugees from Ukraine and the use of digital technologies in exile across Central and Eastern Europe. Policy makers, practitioners, and members of the Ukrainian diaspora are invited to engage in this timely discussion.

MPG has signed a joint letter coordinated by ECRE and endorsed by over 80 civil society organisations, warning of the consequences of severe global funding cuts. These cuts are already undermining asylum systems and the vital services that support people seeking protection in Europe, legal aid, housing, counselling, and inclusion support.

On 8 April, International Roma Day, MPG celebrates Roma communities while calling attention to the structural racism they continue to face across Europe. Our latest policy brief outlines key actions to ensure real inclusion from ending racial profiling to collecting equality data and investing in justice.

In April, MPG engaged with students and policy experts across Europe to discuss EU migration and integration. From lectures and workshops to student visits, our team explored key topics including the EU Pact on Migration, border externalisation, and the drivers of migration.

In a recent EU Perspectives podcast, MPG’s Head of Research Başak Yavçan joined MEPs and migration experts to discuss the EU’s fragmented approach to migration and returns. From controversial return hubs in third countries to the lack of coordination on reintegration, the episode unpacks why Europe urgently needs long-term, human rights-based solutions.

April: MIPEX in Use

The Migrant Integration Policy Index (MIPEX) is a unique tool which measures integration policies in 56 countries across 8 policy areas. It provides up-to-date, comprehensive research data and analysis on which to base policies, proposals for change and projects.

In April 2025, it was featured in 3 scientific journals and articles.
