Dear
,

MPG is committed to countering structural racism, and shaping better anti-discrimination policies at both national and European level. Together with partners, we are collecting data and evidence on structural and institutional racism in Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Greece, Romania, Czechia and Latvia. Throughout February and March, national workshops on how to tackle structural discrimination are taking place in several European countries. Stay tuned for publications based on this research soon.

If you want to learn more about the state of anti-discrimination policy in Europe, you can look into our recently published European Equality Law Review of 2023. Which provides an extensive overview of the relevant developments in gender equality and non-discrimination law from the period 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023, at European as well as national level.

Another way we are following through on this commitment is through our New Europeans Initiative and its "Changing the Table" Podcast. This month we have a brand new episode for you wherein our host, Seden Anlar, unpacks the harmful narrative that migrants are hard to reach and hard to find.

To set the agenda and realise our vision of a society where everyone can fully participate and contribute to an inclusive society and public life, we engage with policymakers and key networks. This month our Deputy-Director Alexander Wolffhardt took part in a panel organised by the Representation of the State of Baden-Württemberg to the EU. There he pointed our the importance regional policies in the multi-level governance of integration and shared insights from MPG's work on regional integration policies.

Warm regards
Isabelle Chopin, Director of MPG

The 2023 European Equality Law Review has been published

Changing the Table - Episode 4: Unpacking the "migrants are hard to find/reach" narrative

Have you ever heard statements like “We invited people from the migrant community but nobody showed up for our neighbourhood meeting” Or maybe something like, “It’s hard to find migrants that have the right skillset”? The harmful narrative that migrants are hard to reach and hard to find is widespread. But as our guest in this episode point out, there are effective ways to counter it.

In this episode, Seden unpacks this narrative together with Selma Rassoul Project Manager at the PLACE Network and returning guest to the podcast Olivia Long, Managing Editor at the Migration Policy Group and author of the report Meaningful Participation of New Europeans in Policymaking.

Job vacancy at MPG – Communications Manager (Full-time)

MPG is looking to hire a highly motivated and proactive Communications Manager to lead the organisation’s outreach and implement its communications strategy in the areas of migration, integration and non-discrimination. The ideal candidate will have a passion for and experience in implementing communications strategies, coordinating between stakeholders and digital communications. You should be a strategic communicator with an appetite to learn new tactics and the ability to work on your own and independently manage multiple projects at once.

National workshops to improve anti-discrimination policymaking and dismantle structural racism

To improve anti-discrimination policymaking and dismantle structural racism, the Migration Policy Group and the Robert Bosch Foundation are promoting strong cooperation and synergies between researchers, civil society organisations and racialised communities at the national level. Together with partners, we are collecting data and evidence on structural racism in Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Greece, Romania, Czechia and Latvia. And throughout February, national workshops on how to tackle structural discrimination are taking place in several European countries.

In the coming months, MPG will publish a unique and comprehensive comparative report on structural racism and a policy brief to put forward evidence-based policy recommendations and actions at the national and EU level.

Regions are key in multi-level governance of integration policies

MPG's Deputy Director, Alexander Wolffhardt, participated in a panel discussion on the factors contributing to the successful integration of newcomers into European societies, organised by the Representation of the State of Baden-Württemberg to the European Union.

Alexander commented on how exemplary the integration management of Baden-Württemberg is for multi-level coordination of integration policies, given that MPG's REGIN research pointed out how this is a major weakness of many other regional integration policies.

This month's MIPEX Citations

The Migrant Integration Policy Index (MIPEX) is a unique tool which measures integration policies in 56 countries across 8 policy areas. It provides up-to-date, comprehensive research data and analysis on which to base policies, proposals for change and projects.

Here are this month's MIPEX citations:

  • “Mainstreaming immigrant integration in Labour Market Support: policy index and alternative policy frameworks” by Salta Zhumatova, published in Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies.
  • “Understanding public support for workplace diversity and antidiscrimination policies in Europe” by Lieselotte Blommaert and Marcel Coenders, published in Frontiers in Sociology.
