Policymakers must tackle structural racism, as it undermines social cohesion and equality in Europe. Clear legal recognition, improved data collection, consistent enforcement of anti-discrimination laws, and inclusive decision-making are crucial steps to dismantling systemic inequalities and fostering equality.
Join us on Thursday, November 14, from 15:30 to 17:00 CET, for a thought-provoking webinar, "Voting Rights for All in an EU Divided." As the EU faces an ever-growing democratic deficit, millions of residents are excluded from voting due to their non-EU citizenship, undermining the principle of universal suffrage. With only 14 EU countries granting voting rights to third-country nationals at the local level, the majority still reside in member states where they have no electoral voice at all. This exclusion impacts not only representation but also long-term integration and responsiveness of policies to diverse resident needs. The session, led by Alexander Wolffhardt, Deputy Director of MPG and Sinem Yilmaz, MPG's Integration Policy Analyst, will explore insights from a new Policy Brief, providing an EU-wide analysis and recommending pathways toward inclusive electoral policies. Don’t miss this chance to engage in dialogue about the future of democratic inclusion in Europe.
On 14 October 2024, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen outlined migration proposals focused on externalising EU policies and harmonising returns. MPG raises concerns about fragmented policies, lack of cooperation among EU states, and risks to human rights. External partnerships may empower third countries, create long-term challenges, and undermine EU values. We stress the need for fair return processes, human rights protections, and legal migration pathways to reduce reliance on people smugglers. Offshore asylum processing could also harm migrant integration and undo progress.
The high-level roundtable and networking event, Together for Equality, Stronger for All: Celebrating Standards for Equality Bodies, organised by Equinet, European Network of Equality Bodies, marked the historic adoption of the Standards Directives for Equality Bodies in May 2024. The event showcased Equinet and its members’ crucial role in advancing the negotiations on this legislation from 2022 to 2024. By bringing together key stakeholders – national ministries, European institutions, and civil society – the event raised awareness of the Standards’ significance and encourage their effective transposition at the national level.
On 25-26 September 2024, MPG connected officials leading the European Commission (EC)’s work on migrant integration with civil society and academia representatives from across the 27 EU countries. This took place as part of the 13th Annual Editorial Meeting of the European Website on Integration (EWSI).
During the last month MPG was quoted, and our experts featured in several media outlets in France, Catalonia, Turkey and Greece commenting and reflecting on the current debate around EU migration and asylum policies. We also published an opinion article on structural racism in the EU in Euractiv.
The Migrant Integration Policy Index (MIPEX) is a unique tool which measures integration policies in 56 countries across 8 policy areas. It provides up-to-date, comprehensive research data and analysis on which to base policies, proposals for change and projects.
In October 2024, it featured in four scientific journals and articles.
